Founded in 1457, it is one of the oldest universities in Germany and has a long tradition of excellence in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and technology. The university is home to more than 24,000 students from Germany and over 120 other countries. The University of Freiburg is recognized for its innovative strength and academic excellence, both nationally and internationally. It offers a wide range of disciplines across its eleven faculties, providing an inspiring environment where it’s a pleasure to study, research, and live.

Institute of Nursing Science

The Institute of Nursing Science at the University of Freiburg is a leading institution in the field of professional nursing and nursing research, following in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale. The institute is centered around the observation, documentation, and analysis of nursing and midwifery practice and education.

In their research department, they produce results that lead to improvements in clinical practice and directly reach patients and relatives, who in turn experience better care. The institute offers degree programs where they pass on research and specialty skills to examine practices, compensate for deficits, and try new initiatives which make nurses and midwives into experts.

The Bachelor of Science (Nursing Science) has been offered since the winter semester of 2010/2011 within the University of Freiburg Faculty of Medicine as an integrated course alongside the vocational nursing preparation program. The students attain two qualifications in six semesters: the academic qualification, Bachelor of Science, and the vocational qualification to practice as a general or pediatric nurse.

In the winter semester of 2021/22, the first primary qualification degree, Bachelor of Science (Midwifery Science) began at the University of Freiburg in cooperation with the University Hospital. The students obtain a evidence-based, high quality practical and theoretical education at university level. Midwifery practice environments and a specialist simulation centre contribute to the educational program.

The Master of Science (Nursing Science) program is offered as a collaboration with the University Hospital Freiburg and in cooperation with the Catholic University, Freiburg. During the four-semester course, students attain further competence in advanced nursing practice (ANP) and clinical research.

Their goal is to optimize the acute and long-term care of patients and the support of pregnant and birthing women continuously through the provision of highly qualified staff. In this way, they contribute to the strengthening of health care at a local, national, and global level in the face of current and future challenges.
