The institute offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs as well as individual academic courses within the first and second cycle of higher education. The institute offers a postgraduate program leading to a PhD degree in Health Care Sciences. More than fifty students have successfully completed the program and have been awarded a PhD degree.

The Swedish Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Chapter Tau Omega is hosted by the Institute of Health and Care Sciences, The Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg. The Chapter Tau Omega was established in the beginning of 2004 and gained Chapter status in November 2005, as the second Chapter in Europe.

Current chapter activities concerns the second STTI European Regional Conference which is to be hosted by the Chapter Tau Omega and The Institute of Health and Care Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, between 16-18 June 2014. Themes for the Conference is Leadership, Learning and Research in Nursing and Midwifery.
